Orlando's airport is ringed by toll roads

SR 528 and SR 417, both cashless Central Florida Expressway roads, meet the airport, and the fastest route to Disney, the coast and Tampa usually takes one. Pick a drive to see the tolls each way and how many minutes the toll-free route adds.

Every fastest route here uses a toll road, yet each has a free alternative; downtown Orlando and Winter Park lose nothing by skipping them. In a rental, Florida's Toll-By-Plate is not available, so tolls go through the rental company's program unless you bring your own transponder.

MCO rental car garage to Magic Kingdom (Ticket and Transportation Center parking)

CFX tolls save real time here

24 mi, about 28 min on the fastest route, without traffic or stops.

The fastest route to the Magic Kingdom parking at the Ticket and Transportation Center takes SR 528 west toward I-4 going and SR 417 coming back, both cashless CFX toll roads. The toll-free route on local roads and untolled stretches is slower. In a rental, Florida's TOLL-BY-PLATE is not available, so CFX plate bills go to the rental company unless your own E-PASS or SunPass is on the car. Who charges the tolls around MCO

Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX)

Runs the cashless expressways around Orlando, including SR 408, 414, 417, 429, 451, 453, 528 and 538. There are no toll booths.

Without a pass: Pay By Plate: a plate photo is billed to the registered owner at double the E-PASS rate, due within 30 days. E-PASS rates are 50% lower than Pay By Plate.

In a rental car: For a rental, the registered owner is the rental company, so a plate bill reaches you through its program.

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise (SunPass)

Runs Florida's Turnpike and SunPass. SunPass PRO also works where E-ZPass is accepted.

Without a pass: TOLL-BY-PLATE bills the registered owner by plate photo plus a $2.50 administrative fee per invoice, and cannot be used on Florida Managed Lanes.

In a rental car: TOLL-BY-PLATE is not available for customers in rental cars. If you own a SunPass Portable, add the rental's plate and dates to your account.

Before you take the counter's toll plan

At MCO the toll plan question comes up on the first drive: the fast routes to Disney, the coast and Tampa use cashless toll roads, and Florida says Toll-By-Plate is not available to rental car customers. Your options are the rental company's program or your own transponder (E-PASS, SunPass, or E-ZPass where accepted). Each rental company's plan and fee is in its rental agreement; read that before you accept a plan at the counter.

Toll questions

Can I drive from Orlando airport to Disney World without tolls?

Yes, but it is slower. The fastest routes to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot use SR 528 going and SR 417 coming back, both CFX toll roads; the toll-free route uses local roads. The table shows the extra minutes.

Can I use Toll-By-Plate in a rental car in Orlando?

No. Florida's Turnpike Enterprise says TOLL-BY-PLATE is not available for customers in rental cars. CFX roads have no toll booths, so a car without a transponder is billed by plate to the rental company, and CFX's Pay By Plate rate is double the E-PASS rate.

Is downtown Orlando toll-free from MCO?

Yes. The fastest-with-tolls line touches SR 528 near the airport, but without traffic the toll-free route takes no longer.

Which MCO drives are worth the tolls?

The Space Coast: the Beachline Expressway (SR 528) to Cocoa Beach and Kennedy Space Center saves the most time of any drive here. Disney, SeaWorld, Tampa and Miami also save real time on toll roads.

Fastest car route out and back from the public Valhalla router run by FOSSGIS (OpenStreetMap data, no live traffic), once allowing tolls and once excluding every tolled road. Toll flags come from OpenStreetMap toll tags, which are set per direction, so a bridge tolled one way only shows in that direction. Every toll verdict on this page was then checked by hand against the toll operator sources listed. Destinations geocoded with Nominatim. Drive times are free-flow estimates; real times are longer with traffic and stops.
